Good article. But as a salesman who has made thousands of dollars selling door-to-door, and also selling credit cards in public areas. This is what I suggest as best:

Approach the customer, and then if they notice you, smile at them with enthusiasm, at this point you should be within talking distance, and then greet them, with a good amount of positivity, with the greeting most popular in your geographic area (city/country.. etc). In my country it is "hey how's it going?". 8/10 times the customer will respond positively, assume they need your help, and them you can go ahead and ask them a question like "Is there something specific you are looking for today?"

Guilt by association. Guilt by accusation. Who wants to be associated with that? Just your name in the same sentence is a brutal situation.

They present the facts of the case, so far, somewhat objectively.

Then Pitt's side of the story for several paragraphs.

Then BAM! "In the petition for divorce Jolie filed on Monday, the actress requested sole physical custody of the couple's six children – Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 8."

Trail with what you want (aka serial position effect) indicates the journalist wants this first and last thought to stick.

If you’re not completely comfortable saying “yes”... challenge yourself to replace "yes" with one of these options: possibly; anything's for sale; at the right price; if you're willing to pay for it; maybe, working on it, we'll see, not yet, if enough people want it, maybe with version 2; we could probably work something out; we'd love to – unfortunately x y z; when pigs fly; that would be awesome.

Hey Jade,

Thanks for referencing my post on brevity! I also agree with your point about "clarity" being the sweet spot and something like "verbosity" opposite "brevity."

Maybe it's better if the two circles are "short" and "exhaustive," and the sweet spot is "clear."

In Earl Nightingale's Essence of Success audio series, he speaks of Dr. Hans Selye's story of the twins who grew up total opposites. When asked why they developed as they had, one a drunk and the other quite not, they both gave the same answer, "What else would you expect when you have a father like mine." This was the impetus of the pattern of thinking referred to in this article. People have a tendency to justify, rationalize and explain using whatever is most obvious to them. It might have no basis in reality, at all, but it does to them.
