But as a salesman who has made thousands of dollars selling door-to-door, and also selling credit cards in public areas. This is what I suggest as best:

Approach the customer, and then if they notice you, smile at them with enthusiasm, at this point you should be within talking distance, and then greet them, with a good amount of positivity, with the greeting most popular in your geographic area (city/country.. etc). In my country it is "hey how's it going?". 8/10 times the customer will respond positively, assume they need your help, and them you can go ahead and ask them a question like "Is there something specific you are looking for today?"

Re: Trail with what you want

Here's a great example of mass media patterns of persuasion:
http://www.msn.com/en-us/mo...
It starts ...

"Brad Pitt did not strike his child during a heated mid-flight argument with Angelina Jolie last week, according to a source close to the actor."

Guilt by association. Guilt by accusation. Who wants to be associated with that? Just your name in the same sentence is a brutal situation.

They present the facts of the case, so far, somewhat objectively.

Then Pitt's side of the story for several paragraphs.

Then BAM!
